  • This preposterous update removed the most convenient feature

    1
    By Joyful Girl’s Hater Husband
Ingredients are listed at the top above the preparation steps, so instead of seeing them side by side so one could plan ahead while cooking, now it seems scrolling up and down on the iPad is the order of the day. Anyone who feels the need to think, “Well you could just blah blah blah”, save it. You’re neither clever nor helpful. This is about convenience and ease of use, which all apps should strive for. While I’m at it, the need to reload the entire recipe box of everything I’ve saved while I’m trying to decide is another annoyance.

Comments can be so useful— and so annoying
  • Bring back the lock-screen disabling

The latest version no longer disables the auto screen shutoff, so the app locks out in the middle of following a recipe… bring back that feature!
  • No longer works on Apple Watch

I loved and used the app for a while when all of a sudden the Apple Watch would only show one recipe and then only the intro/instructions. Tried reinstalling on both my phone and watch with no luck. Such a bummer because it was so helpful. Update: after of the most recent version, the Apple Watch app is still completely useless
  • Makes cooking easy and lots of amazing recipes

Before I used NYT cooking app I was intimidated. But during the pandemic I had a lot of time on my hands and I started making bread from the app and from there I made more complex recipes. Easy step by step recipes right on my phone. With this app I feel like I can make anything. Because of this app I have made Beef Bourgeon and my own bread. Love love this app and it helped me feel more confident when cooking.
  • No text select

It used to be possible to select text in the app; this made it easy for me to copy ingredients to my shared family shopping list. Removing that ability is such a bummer and makes it much more complicated; now I have to open the recipe in my browser, tap the annoying growth-hack popup that tries to force me back to the app, and then copy the text to my shared shopping list app. Feels like a small but significant step backward.
  • Terrible rating system

Of course there a lot of good recipes. However they should use a decimal system for rating rather than a flat 4 or 5 stars. The issue is that it seems that 80% ratings are 4 stars. It’s hard to decide between recipes if almost all are listed as 4 stars.
  • My go to for recipes

I love The Times cooking app! If I want a salmon dish I search and voila 20 recipes to choose from. I subscribed to Bon appetit for over 10 years. Well bon voyage Bon appetit! The Times app is so much easier to use. Tomorrow night it’s Elaines fettuccine Alfredo! Alan from MA formerly NYC
  • Great tool

Love the ideas from these recipes. The one thing that can’t be done is adding notes to saved recipes for future use. Hence 4 stars rather than 5. This is focused on the app itself, not the individual recipes or cooks.
