The New York Times game app has become my daily ritual. Sometimes I breeze through Spelling Bee, other times it takes a bit longer. Either way, getting to genius every day is a great brain workout and a shot in the arm. Wordle, Sudoku, Strands, Mini Crossword and connecting the letters are fun too. When I have time, I’ll tackle the big crossword.

There should be an option to customize the games tab. The ability to reorder and hide games would great!
  • Used to be good, now so many ads

This app has some clever games, including the beloved “Wordle” which was invented by a husband for his wife and eventually sold to NYT with the promise that it would be free for everyone, forever. Recently, the app has added a ton of pre-game ad videos and other distracting things — it used to be a real peaceful, straightforward, calming element of my routine and now I hardly use it anymore. I know many others who feel the same. I recommend other gaming apps if you also want an ad-free experience!
  • New xword stats and UI

The new layout for the crossword stats is honestly pretty bad, you need to go back and forth between the three different stats to see, and they aren’t aligned to the same metric! So the visual doesn’t make sense. Also, when looking at the “bots” after completing a puzzle, to get back to the main page you need to click 3 different places on different screens. It’s inane; please just put a back button on the bottom of the screen in the same place everywhere so navigation isn’t so annoying. Surely UI in 2025 doesn’t need to be this bad..

Recently, the app has started posting an internal banner, advertising some deal, that blocks navigation buttons. I now have to close out of the app and reopen it to return to the main page, since the ad blocks the back arrow.

It wasn't stated anywhere obvious until installed, with account setup complete.
