Educator’s Perspective: This application has been carefully developed with pedagogical criteria in mind, by a teacher, to be used in schools for music, media, and programming lessons. For educators who would like to use this app in their teaching, we recommend giving a short introduction to timing and rhythm before presenting the app itself. Before bringing it into the classroom, please conduct the following short 20-minute exercise: Using a stopwatch, clap once per second for 10 seconds. This corresponds to the far-right button in the timing menu, where 1 second equals 1000 ms. Next, try clapping twice per second, again using the stopwatch. After 10 claps, make sure 5 seconds have passed. This corresponds to button number 2, with a timing of 500 ms. In the same way, practice with button number 3, where 333 ms corresponds to 3 claps per second. For higher tempos, further practice is needed. For 10 beats per second, we suggest replacing normal clapping with gentle, rhythmic hand taps in sync with the 1000 ms timing. After a short period of practice, you will develop a stronger sensitivity to timing. At that point, you may begin teaching your students about timing and move on to introducing the app. During the teaching phase, we strongly encourage you to set the following learning goals: Understanding timing. Practicing single, double, triple, and quadruple beats. Recognizing pauses. In the lower left menu, you will find the “mute” button, which can be used to insert silence according to the chosen timing. In music education, the concept of pause is fundamental, and this is an excellent opportunity to also mention John Cage’s work 4′33″. The aTurn your iPhone and iPad into a complete drum kit.
