  • Handy app to learn languages

Believe it or not, I remember first downloading this app in 2017 to learn Thai before my upcoming trip to Thailand 🇹🇭 Back then, it was pretty much the only app that offered Thai. But I learned a lot, especially getting my ears familiar to hearing Thai and practicing my pronunciation since the audio was so good. Fast forward nearly 7 years later!!! I’m using this app to learn Georgian for another upcoming trip 🇬🇪 The app may look completely different from my first experience, but everything is SO much better! So many languages to choose from (still the best for Thai in my opinion 😋), clear audio from real people as opposed to AI, easy to use, and fun lessons to keep me interested. But not too fun that I get distracted from learning! You can also turn on/off the transcription feature for non-Latin languages, which is a great indicator of your language level. The app is also constantly adding new languages and features, which means there will never be a shortage of learning. Highly recommend if you’re in the market for a language learning app, especially if you want to learn Southeast Asian languages! 👏

The best place to learn many lesser known / more obscure Asian languages. I am learning Cantonese on Ling and it is the best app for Asian languages using a duolingo style format but frankly more straightforward and better. I’ve experienced some bugs on the app from time to time but I will write an error report via email to the support team and they always get back quick, and within days I see an update on the App Store for ling. Very happy with what I get for my subscription so far. Can’t wait for more updates. This app deserves more attention.

It overall is a great way to learn new languages and not forget them but I do wish it didn’t update as often so I can spend more time using the actual app
  • “Better Than My Serbian”

Normally I do not do reviews, but I had too. 3 days ago I decided to learn Serbian to communicate with family I have on my grandmother’s side. And I couldn’t find an app. Until I found this one. Not only am I learning Serbian and retaining it, I’m also dual learning Lithuanian as well just because it was offered. Let me say hvala for this app. :)

I was super excited to finally find an app that would help me learn Tagalog. I understand 2 dialects in the Philippines fluently, but unfortunately lost the ability to speak them. I think how Ling is structured is interesting enough for me to continue learning from it. I did the 7-day trial and opted into the annual subscriptions. I forgot to cancel it otherwise I probably would’ve looked for a new app. The annual costs the same as Duolingo and Duolingo is definitely still better than this app. I believe this app needs serious improvement and proofreading. I say this because we are expected to know the answers or translation without a lesson on how the words are structured. It’s not that bad for me since I understand it, but I can’t imagine someone who doesn’t understand to learn it in the way that this app is teaching it. So one of two things is true: Tagalog is a actually complicated language to learn or this app just makes it complicated. I think they teach by repetition vs actually breaking down the grammar and structure of the sentence. For example, with Spanish or Portuguese (languages I’m learning on Duolingo) they break down the verbs and the grammar/structure. It helps in understanding when to use what. On this app, the structure doesn’t seem to be the same so it’s confusing to know when to use it or how. Also because I understand and am familiar with how some words are said I can tell that what’s taught is mixed formal and informal. Which makes the overall organization of this app disappointing. It’ll make you guess your way through the lessons, have an “exam” (gives you 3 hearts/tries), and then it’ll briefly break down the grammar for you. I don’t find the breakdowns very helpful. Also, I notice a lot of typos. One time it said the word translated to “good” when they meant “food.” Other times the audio isn’t matching the words showing on the screen. I started this review with 3 stars and after writing down my thoughts and review on the 7 days I’ve had this app, with the price it charges… I’ve revised it to show 1 star. I think it needs a lot of improvement before it can be worth continuing. I might actually just look elsewhere to re-learn my language.

This app is misusing parts of the Japanese language within literally the first lesson. I feel like for real beginners it will be very confusing later when, for example, you find out you’re not supposed to call another person あなた. They also say さよならmeaning goodbye and that the other person won’t be seen again with a response to this of またね, casually see u later. These responses in the first lesson are inaccurate to how Japanese speech is. I can try to give it more of a chance but it’s disappointing so far for this reason. Because, most who are just starting Japanese, probably won’t be able to recognize this.

The app is great in that it offers so many languages. However, I have a suggestion for the Telugu course. It would be very nice to have lessons for learning the alphabets, both reading and writing.
  • Very frustrated with app

Trying out the app but finding it hard to get past the ad to get to the lesson. It gets stuck showing “test mode” and never escapes the ad. In the rare circumstances I do get past the ad, it often crashes half way through the lesson causing me to start over.
