  • Almost Perfect

This is a great app but it is better on the desktop. If you’re doing ancestry work and American, there really is none better. The only failure of the app is when it comes to stepfamily and adopted family. A prime example is when it locks you out of selecting adoptive parents when trying to connect them in federal or state censuses. Seems like an easy programming tweak.

I love this so much, I got my mom and sister to do it too!
  • Wrong information

I haven’t looked at Ancestry in several years. It showed up in my email today, so I opened it again. I noticed that it misnamed my father’s last name. Instead the site lists my father’s birth year, but has assigned him MY married name instead of his birth name. How can I change this? I tried deleting it, but when I open his name again it still lists my married instead of my father’s birth name! Suggestions?
  • Greedy company

They had several interesting features available with the DNA test. Now it’s all locked behind a pay wall. You can still view your matches, but finding out how your related will cost you. Very few free features are left.
  • Worthless Money Grab

They’ve put almost every feature behind a paywall now. I purchased a kit and even had a subscription for a while and can no longer access the data that I’ve collated. You cannot label matches by parent. You cannot access shared matches. You can’t even add a matched profile to your tree. I’ve thought about renewing my membership from time to time to work on my tree (I don’t need a co start membership), but now I definitely will not.
  • Much improved

    Love Ancestry.com
  • It’s that rare mobile app that exceeds the desktop version

…well, mostly. As our family’s “appointed” genealogist and memory preserver, I’ve used the browser version of Ancestry.com for more than a decade. But I find myself drawn more and more to the mobile app. This is usually when I’m reading at night or conversing about the family tree during the day with family or friends. The app is just handy and so well (and cleanly) designed. The sister DNA app is great, too.
  • Under promised and then incredibly underperformed

The 23 and Me I bought as gifts were infinitely better.

Ancestry's whole business model seems to be taking your work and then making you pay them for it. If you pay $100 for a DNA test, don't be surprised when they don't deliver on the value they promise. Now they're placing shared DNA matches behind a paywall. The greed won't stop - they will continue charging you more for things you already paid them for or work you did yourself. Save your money and dignity and go with another service.
  • So much fun.
