  • NOT for beginners

This might be a good app for someone at intermediate level to practice speaking their new language in order to improve fluency, but it is absolutely not for beginners. You’re thrown right in to conversational practice with no vocabulary building and no repetition. You’re asked a complex question, forced (because you have no foundation) to let the app craft a multi-sentence response for you, then speak your response, to which the app awards a 94% score even for a truly mangled and atrocious butchering of the pronunciation and accent. It’s ludicrous. There is no learning here for true beginners. Come back when you have a foundation and would like to improve fluency through conversation. Then this might be of use.

  • Just has me learn words with no context

The AI tutor just tells me a word and asks me to repeat them, one after another, without giving me any context or practice for each, like my Preply tutor does or Pimsleur. It's well known that this method isn't effective for language learning. Pimsleur actually knows that you need to learn and repeat and say a word in 20 different contexts to memorize it. Pimsleur was created over 40 years ago and it's still better: it's almost like it takes time to make a good product, and you can't just slap AI on it.

The payment plan should be the first thing you see. Having me go through a half hour of tutor set up to then hit me with the news that it’s just a five day trial is an infuriating waste of time.
