  • Love it when it works

    I really wanted to love Jumpspeak. I do like its teaching method and it is working for me but there are a few caveats. There is a huge lag between when it records your speech and the evaluation of said speech. Long enough at times you wonder if it’s working at all. It breaks the cadence of any conversation the app is trying to teach. Once you accept this frustration it is mostly tolerable. But some days I just give up. I do like the lesson format. There is a general conversation overview, followed by listen, write, speak, conversation, role play and words learned. All are pretty good except the role play. During role play the lag ruins it. The AI gives feedback but I’ve found it very rudimentary and often even criticizes the sentence structure of the sentence the app provides for practice in the first place. I am learning Dutch atm and feel Jumpspeak focuses on a more contemporary or casual form opposed to the formal. I prefer this. I am not going to pursue a refund at this point considering I like the method and have hope the lagging issue will get resolved. My advice is when you want to try it, take advantage of a free trial period if possible and be sure to set aside time every day during that trial to complete full lessons. Otherwise you’ll not see the full performance picture.

    I’ve been using the app for 11 days now and what I found although it is a great app the microphone recognition software is bad but I love the app other than that

    I need to pay PREMIUM AI for unlimited convos after paying for what is pretty much the same thing as Duolingo? 2 convos a day who are you kidding? Cancelling this right now.

  • Spoken word recognition doesn’t work

    It’s fine as long and you type. But any spoken work recombination is bad. AirPods, headset, phone mic can’t get anything at all.

    I like the app but, the voice recognition needs some work. I’ve had to skip over a ton of the practices just because Auer the app doesn’t pick up what I am saying. It also doesn’t always introduce you to new words before using them in the lesson. It asks you to say a sentence but has not covered the words used in the sentence so you have no clue what the word is or even sounds like.

    A good approach and concept but - still in its infancy and needs a lot more play through and fine tuning. For example the German pack had the wrong words tied to each other (uhr for clock & stunde for hour) so you have to actually click the wrong answer to get it “correct” throughout the lesson. Luckily I knew that was wrong, but I wouldn’t trust new words now..

    So I paid for the lifetime membership which was pretty expensive, being super excited about the AI, then to find out I have to pay for more premium AI conversations if I want to have more than one per day it seems. This part is ridiculous. If you pay for lifetime you should have access to all features for life

    Language, learning apps, change their pedagogy often, and jumpspeak has been on the leading edge of AI integration for a while now. They do a great job of orchestrating learning without it becoming redundant and boring.

    I live close to the border in San Diego, I know the basics. However the first beginning lessons even mark me say “no” as wrong.

    I speak Japanese, English and Spanish. I thought I would try to learn Korean because it’s similar to Japanese So I paid like $70 for this app, but the lessons and tests for Korean are completely backwards. The app tries to test you on things you have not learned yet. There’s no basic teaching of sounds or words or anything. It just jumps into phrases but it’s not teaching you phrases it just asks you test questions like you have already learned them. So for instance, in the second lesson, it gives you Korean words you’ve never heard before and says put them in the correct order, but I don’t even know what the words are or what they sound like. By the way I’ve also taken Greek, Hebrew and Latin so I am very good at learning languages. This app is absolutely horrible and I would like a refund.
