This app actually helps you learn languages in a conversational way, unlike other language learning apps that teach you words you don’t actually need.

I had already been thru the first 4 modules of Pimsleur Mandarin and decided to give Mandarin 5 a whirl. I especially like the challenge activities, which force a speaker to match the proper tones. I just feel as if this costs twice what it should cost.

When I discovered all the extra learning tools it really sped up my ability to remember the vocabulary and grammar (I needed the visual learning options.)

I have used many language programs and Pimsleur is the best for learning to speak and understand the basics in a foreign language. Some other programs are more addictive but Pimsleur is more practical. Most important, it begins with the polite form of the verbs (many languages have a polite form and a casual form) so that you do not risk accidentally insulting either strangers or your superiors at work or school. It focuses on spoken language. This can be frustrating because I like to know how words are written. However this is essential for learning to navigate in a new language (as opposed to simply learning to read). If your goal is to be able to go to another country, ask directions, order in a restaurant, talk with a shop clerk or explain a medical issue, Pimsleur is your best choice. UPDATE: They now introduce the informal form very early. I don’t like this because it’s confusing for Americans to learn both at once. However Pimsleur is still the best language app for its focus on useful vocabulary and on learning to speak and listen rather than read and write.

I’ve tried a few other language, learning apps, but so far Pimsleur is the best and most intuitive. I love the way it teaches language through conversations, and not just vocabulary words. It really puts learning a language into context and practical use.
